Code-switching is survival. But it's also a tax you pay every single day.
Every time you adjust your speech, your laugh, your hair, your opinions to fit into a space that wasn't designed for you, that takes energy. Cognitive energy. Emotional energy. Energy that doesn't replenish just because you got home.
The research is clear: code-switching is associated with higher rates of psychological exhaustion, identity confusion, and imposter syndrome, even in women who are excellent at it. Especially in women who are excellent at it.
The goal is not to never code-switch. The goal is to find spaces where you don't have to. More of those. More often.
Where is the ONE place you never have to code-switch? Tell me what it feels like.
