I'm reading My Tender Matador in Spanish (Tengo Miedo Torero—a completely different meaning, but I digress). While my mind conjured a Chilean accent for the dialogue, I noticed I was narrating the prose in an Argentinian one. I do this with most Spanish-language books outside of Spain or Colombia.

My theory: Argentinian Spanish, along with Uruguayan and Colombia's Paisa accent, has a natural musicality to it, something close to Italian in its rhythm. Lyrical prose just feels better when read with this voice.

The larger point here is more than the eyes, writing is felt through our ears—which is why the advice of reading your work out loud is probably one of the lowest effort, highest impact things you can do as a writer (myself included).

Does anyone do this in English?
