I regularly find on blog sites like this a sort of phenomenon that I may best described as a “narcissistic anti-intellectualism” that is published by people that want to feel smart only by undermining the importance of the fields they don’t understand; it’s even regularly done by those that see anti-intellectualism and the decline in literacy as societal problems, but can’t get over the fact that they’re not the smartest person in the room on every topic. This problem seems to stem in part from a lack of any normalized critique of the work of others: works are either treated solely with praise or contempt and we are no longer conditioned to take critique of our work as anything other than personal attacks.
