I spent some long awaited time with an old friend of mine and her family, and I’m reminded that we shouldn’t be afraid to challenge existing beliefs, norms, assumptions, expectations. Especially when it comes to protecting those we love.

Sometimes the people we love most don’t fit any mold. They challenge assumptions, both ours and society’s. They expand our understanding of things including how we love.

Our job isn’t to steer them back in line, to make them feel small, to put them in their place. It’s to protect their space, their path — so they can find their own light, their own truth, and their own version of self. Especially for the younger generations.

We’re in an era of tremendous change. We’re deconstructing long-held, inherited beliefs and assumptions and change is business as usual now.

And when it comes to our loved ones, and really all of us — maybe now is the time to lean into protecting spaces for growth, discovery, and change.

Not because it’s easy. Because it’s right. And because we are worthy of it. That is how we grow and evolve. We learn from each other and those we love. 🤍
