I think I may have lost an IRL friend to gender ideology. An old friend, a gay man, reconnected, and wanted to talk about how he was thinking about transitioning. I asked him gently to be careful - you only have one body and once you start changing it, it can be very hard to undo. Unfortunately, that was already too much, and the conversation went badly. It was very surreal having a man list all of the things that made him a woman that have nothing to do with how I experience my life - makeup, dresses, condescension from strangers. I feel sad that he was upset, but I see this as a bad path for most people, and I would hope a friend would warn me if they thought I was doing something that could hurt me even if it would make me upset at the time.
