Unpopular opinion: to hell with digital literacy. In our obsession with digital literacy, we’ve forsaken actual literacy. A child who never develops the sustained focus necessary to read a book or follow a complicated argument (and no I’m not talking about a 20 second TikTok news recap) will never be able to spot misinformation online, or indeed anywhere.

Less than half of Americans read even a single book in a given year. If you’re not reading regularly, you’ll have trouble recognizing misleading rhetoric. You won’t have the historical & media literacy needed to distinguish truth from lies. This is why they want you illiterate.

Once we had a society in which the overwhelming majority of people were literate; in which children of ten routinely read books by Chesterton and Defoe; in which coal miners built and maintained their own lending libraries; in which it was not unusual for a soldier to write home to his lover, “My love for you is deathless, it seems to bind me to you with mighty chains that nothing but Omnipotence could break.”
