I think it’s important to realize that writing is rarely one inspired draft—it’s more like arranging puzzle pieces that constantly change shape and don’t come with instructions. It’s a fucking pain in the ass. But so necessary.

Fragments, half-sentences, ideas that contradict each other, words that don’t yet know what they’re doing next to one another. As a writing instructor with a background in composition and rhetoric, I’m a firm believer in letting the first pass be a kind of stream-of-consciousness spill, just getting it out of the body and onto the page or into the notes app before it has time to be judged
