The Weight of Staying Hidden

At the Intersection: Autistic Pride Chattanooga Honors Black History Month

Masking is often talked about like it’s a personal habit — something autistic people do to “fit in.” But for Black autistic people, masking is a survival strategy shaped by racism, ableism, and the constant pressure to avoid being misread as threatening, defiant, or uncooperative. It’s not about fitting in. It’s about staying safe.

Black autistic adults learn early that natural communication — tone, facial expressions, sensory reactions, the need for clarity — can be interpreted as disrespect or aggression. So masking becomes a safety strategy. Softening voice. Over‑explaining. Scripting. Hiding overwhelm. Shrinking to avoid consequences other people never have to think about.

Masking keeps people from being punished, but it also keeps them from being seen. It hides burnout, anxiety, and the toll of constantly monitoring how to move through the world. And when someone finally unmasks, people assume they’ve changed — not realizing they were only seeing the version that felt safest.

The cost is real: exhaustion, misdiagnosis, delayed diagnosis, and a lifetime of being praised for how well someone hides.

What We Carry Forward at APC

APC names masking for what it is: a response to systems that punish Black autistic communication. APC honors the labor it takes to survive those systems and works to build spaces where Black autistic people don’t have to choose between safety and authenticity.
