You don’t need a tortilla press to make tortillas.
All you need is a flat surface, two pieces of plastic, and something flat to press with. A skillet works. A heavy pan works. A press is about convenience.
Before buying one, try the skillet method. Make a few batches. See if you actually enjoy the process. If you do, then invest in a good press. It will save time and give you a more even tortilla.
The detail most people miss is how the press closes.
When empty, it should not sit perfectly flat. The hinge side should be slightly higher. When you add masa and press down, the dough creates lift. That lift should bring the plates into a level position. If the press starts perfectly flat, the hinge side drops lower under pressure and you end up with uneven thickness.
You do not need the most expensive press. You need one that distributes pressure evenly when dough is inside.
