Jane, thanks for reading. The US-Taiwan Business Council is largely a defense policy support organization for arming Taiwan against China. It still does regular biz, and began as a biz council to promote biz relations, but after the US military pulled out in 1979 and the Washington cut off diplomatic ties, the Taiwanese came under the mercy of Beijing. The Council slowly filled the vacuum of what the US military could continue to assist Taiwan in defending itself. This did not just include weapons (hardware) but also training/education at US military institutions (like West Point) and military bases (like Fort Bragg/Benning). Without the assistance, the island's fledgling democracy, ending martial law in 1985, the Chinese would have simply captured the island and turned it into another "province" of Greater China. The US just announced a possible freeze of weapons sales to Taiwan after Trump and Xi met. This delighted the butchers in Beijing. On Israeli sales to Taiwan, the island nation is alone in the world. No one beyond the US will weapons to Taiwan. But now that the Israeli's have discovered that China supplied the Iranians with missile and UAV tech to use against Israel and Middle East partners (UAE/Kuwait/Saudi), the folks in Israel began fulfilling wishlists of weapons (like the Iron Dome), that the US refused to sale to Taiwan due to the One-China Policy and the MTRC. I've seen the Arrow 2 (part of Iron Dome) here in Taipei in 2025. It obviously violates the MTRC (Missile Technology Control Regime) rules on range and warhead size. Ironically, the US insists Taiwan not break the MTRC, even though China builds far more powerful missiles and rockets.
