Donald Trump is in the process of committing political suicide — for no apparent reason.
Let me explain.
He was expressly elected to lower prices on everyday goods. Even the pro-tariff economists out there — and there aren’t many! — acknowledge that, in the short term, prices on everyday goods are going to go up because of the moves Trump made this week.
Doing the EXACT opposite of what people elected you to do is political malpractice.
Know who knows that? Elected Republicans — especially in the Senate — who are doing everything they can to distance themselves from Trump’s tariffs.
“I’m concerned, the stock market is very concerned,” said Wisconsin Sen. Ron Johnson, usually a reliable Trump ally, on Thursday. “I don’t have the president’s strongly held belief this is something that absolutely has to be done.”
Too late now! Republicans threw their lot in with Trump a long time ago. And they are going to have to own the consequences. And, unless politics has TOTALLY changed, those consequences are going to be very bad for the GOP’s near-term electoral prospects — unless Trump reverses course very, very soon.
