BREAKING: In a Friday order, U.S. District Judge Liles Burke gave four lawyers in the Alabama judge-shopping inquiry until 5:00 p.m. Tuesday to turn over a Q&A document that they say is privileged.
Burke, a Trump appointee, was the judge whose comments in a 2022 order closing a case challenging the state’s ban on gender-affirming medical care for minors prompted this two-year investigation into LGBTQ civil rights lawyers.
Now, he’s also in charge of deciding whether to sanction 11 of the lawyers involved — all of whom vigorously dispute the allegations.
I expect a filing from the lawyers at the U.S. Court of Appeals for the Eleventh Circuit challenging Burke’s order well before the Tuesday deadline.
