There is something both dystopian and quintessentially British about UK politics today.
Farage quits his job and announces he is re-running in the by-election he has engineered, presumably to distract from the scandal around his finances. It will cost the taxpayer hundreds of thousands to complete.
Reform offer to pay that bill despite it being against the rules to do so, so either they don’t understand the rules of the system they operate in or it was always an empty gesture - neither is a good look.
All the other political parties say in unison “no thanks, Nige” and refuse to participate, denying him his ‘me against the establishment’ narrative.
His only rival will be Count Binface. A figure who could only appear in British Politics, and one that if there is any justice left in the world, will cruise to victory, relegating Farage to the most humiliating political defeat in history.
I really hope all those voters who might normally abstain, and the left wing minority in Clacton, unify on this.
Like the Boaty McBoatface vote, this would be peak Britain. It’s the kind of cultural moment we all need right now.
