We can learn from Lincoln’s courage and clarity. But we will need a strategic playbook that fits our own time and situation. In our case, attempting to mount an opposition-focused movement will pull us further into the morass of anger and hatred and tighten the grip of the machine on our lives and society. I don’t believe this present moment calls for a great resistance, but it does call for a great refusal.
