This is when you know LOTR isn't just a normal story:
When I got to the line at the end where Aragorn says: "Here then at last comes the ending of the Fellowship of the Ring" - I felt a piercing stab of sorrow, like something was being taken from me. Why? It wasn't because I was surprised it was ending. It was because the depth of the story up to this point had worked some kind of magic on me. I felt not just invested but integrated into the character and adventure on a deeper level. The pace and way Tolkien develops the story allows the reader to find their own selves in it -- and that makes for a wallop of impact when you come to moments like these.
