It’s VE Day, the date of Germany’s unconditional surrender in World War II. On May 7, 1945, my father was bivouacked on the west shore of the Mulde River in Germany, where the 76 armored medical battalion of the 6th Armored Division awaited the arrival of Russian troops from the east. The end of the war did not mean that the job of the medical corps was over. In subsequent weeks, the 76th assumed medical control of hospitals in Blakenheim, Hummelshaim, and six displaced persons camps, the hospital in Isenberg, and the camp and hospital in Buchenwald.
