⬆️While we should take Trump seriously, we should not cower before him. We should continue on our path of resistance with confidence, knowing that we have stared him down and won. And when we do get the chance to vote, we win by such overwhelming margins that the outcomes are incontestable.
I agree 💯percent!!
But I would encourage people to do more than just vote. Here is a list of actions that we can do beyond showing up at the polls.
1) Help register new voters and help existing voters update their registrations.
* Start with your friends family and coworkers. Rules vary state by state, but some good resources to share include: vote411.org (also see vote411.org/voting-rules), vote.org, iwillvote.com, thecivicscenter.org/map
* Register new voters in your community and beyond. I like the League of Women Voters (lwv.org), NC-based You Can Vote (youcanvote.org) and The Civic Center (thecivicscenter.org) for nonpartisan voter registration (e.g., for voter drives held in schools and libraries), and Field Team 6 (fieldteam6.org/all-volu…) for proudly partisan voter registration. FT6 offers frequent training for the various modes of voter registration (mobilize.us/?org_ids=12…)
2) Help voters get the ID they need to successfully vote in states with stringent voter ID laws. VoteRiders (voteriders.org/volunteer) currently has two letter writing campaigns for NC and TX which both have early March primaries. Check out the link for DIY letter writing in above link. More campaigns will be introduced later as their state primaries get closer.
3) Canvassing - there are two main types of canvassing - the so-called "deep canvassing" which is done early (perhaps year-round) and involves a lot of listening and GOTV canvassing that is often focused on a specific candidate. Swing Left has launched a year-round deep canvassing initiative called "Ground Truth". Learn more about it here: ourgroundtruth.org. For more traditional canvassing look to grassroots organizations like your local chapter of Indivisible (indivisible.org) or specific candidates that you wish to support.
4) Write postcards. This is one of my favorite activities and there are already plenty of opportunities to write postcards. (Unless noted below each group should have active campaigns now). Here are some of my favorite options:
* Activate America (activateamerica.vote/po…)
* Environmental Voter Project (environmentalvoter.org/…) - no current campaign seeking volunteers but you can sign up for email list
* Field Team 6 (postcards.fieldteam6.org)
* Postcards for Democracy (postcards.markersfordem…)
* Postcards to Swing States (turnoutpac.org/postcards)
* Postcards4VA (postcards4va.com) - VA candidates only; no campaigns yet
* Postcards to Voters (postcardstovoters.org/v…)
* Reclaim Our Vote (centerforcommonground.o…) - focus on BIPOC voters; addresses for the WI Supreme Court race will be available starting Feb 13th
5) Write Letters with Vote Forward (votefwd.org/instructions). They do not yet have any current campaigns but that should change soon. Follow the link above to set up your account.
6) Phone Banks - phone banks are usually scheduled in the weeks coming up to an election. But with the number of special elections and primaries coming up soon, there should be opportunities to phone bank. In addition to GOTV phonebanks there may be opportunities to recruit volunteers for canvassing or other volunteer activities. Here is a Mobilize query to find a phone bank near you: mobilize.us/?is_virtual…. In addition, some organizations post phone bank opportunities on their own websites. You can find phone banks for Environment Voter project here: environmentalvoter.org/…
