The chainsaw was invented in Scotland in the late 18th century. The first one was used to help doctors in a procedure called symphysiotomy. This meant widening the birth canal during obstructed labor and allowing the baby to pass through. It was safer and faster than using hand saws like before.

Chainsaws weren't used for cutting trees until the beginning of the 20th century.
