Someone recently asked me about why I call my Substack the Duck-Billed Reader. Well, it’s based on this little figure located at the bottom of the Eden panel of Hieronymus Bosch’s masterwork The Garden of Earthly Delights. I was like this as a child: I could be in Eden, or in Heaven, and I’d rather just read a book.
