With global conflict tearing through the fabric of our world, gardens, plants and nature provide solace and respite. These incredible photographs were taken by Sergii Polezhaka, who began a personal mission to document the landscape and gardens around Kyiv when the Ukrainian war started four years ago.

The resulting images tell the story of a resilient nation, showing how people are returning to their homes in areas previously occupied by Russian troops and once again cultivating their gardens around crumbling buildings - an act of defiance, regeneration and ultimately hope.

Sergii will be showing his extraordinary images at the Garden Museum on May 26th, when I will be in conversation with him. We will also be joined by garden designer Camellia Taylor whose dissertation examines the role that gardens and landscape play in areas of conflict. You can join us in person or on livestream.
