This is a fantastic, thought provoking article by Olivia Laing in this weekend’s FT. Is a garden somewhere to retreat from the horrific realities from the world or to process and face up to them? Is gardening a classless, miraculous cure-all for what Laing describes as humanity’s ‘permacrisis’, or is it ‘the product of privilege and inequality’?
I’m not a cynic. I know the good that gardening can do, I’ve seen it too many times. And maybe burying your head in the sand for an hour as you sow seeds or prick out seedlings is too precious to give up.
