Moderna and Merck just announced the first mRNA cancer treatment to beat standard care in a Phase 3 trial. 1,137 patients. Melanoma. This is a first in medical history.

The treatment works by sequencing each patient’s tumor, comparing it to their healthy DNA, and using AI to identify which mutations are most likely to trigger an immune response. Then it builds a custom mRNA shot encoding up to 34 targets, specific to that one person’s cancer.

Results: 49% lower risk of recurrence or death. 59% lower risk of the cancer spreading.

Moderna’s stock rose 90% today.
