No we don’t. This statement completely misrepresents (i) what AI can do* and (ii) how easy it is to synthesize a virus even if you had a functioning design. Also, ever since Covid and the lab-leak craze, people have completely lost track of what the actual likely sources of deadly viruses are, such as bushmeat. An angry teenager cannot design and order a deadly virus in the mail, but they can go out into the jungle, kill a monkey, and infect themselves with a new strain of SIV that ends up causing a worldwide pandemic.
