The question is not so much whether AI could match the right patterns (which it likely could) but whether it could decide on its own which problem to solve and which data to rely on for that task. I haven’t seen any evidence yet that AI can act out of self-motivation.

So the question really in my mind is: if an AI were given all the data, say the three or four critical pieces of data that Watson and Crick had, could it have been able to build a model of DNA?
