The New York Times in an article about the Democratic Party rebrand (Project 2029) lumps Kamala Harris’ position on transgender care in prisons in a bin they call “Leftist” and offers it as an example of how the party hewed to the Left in the 2019 primaries. This is libelous. Leftists have been talking about universal programs, not identity politics. We have actually been silenced, excoriated for questioning the wisdom of using gender identity as a leading idea of progressivism writ large. Look what the radlibs did Vivek Chibber after he went public with the idea that the “woke” regime of ideas in liberal/progressive political spaces was in decline. I don’t use ‘woke’ : I prefer irrational, but liberals and identitarians find irrationality irresistible. The New York Times itself has been irrational in its hatred of popular Leftist policies like single payer health care and higher taxation on corporations and high net worth individuals. Even these policies are not enough today: a rethink of what benefits the majority of working people is necessary. In addition, the Times neglects and reshapes the news to serve its own commitments to a tired centrism: in its recent coverage of video podcasts, it leaves out Joshua Citarella ’s Doomscroll, preferring to focus on anything but a program that features class first Leftists with whom Josh engages as well as right and center right figures. Project 2029 is focused on repackaging stale politics of identity and centrism and incrementalism that nobody can get excited about because liberalism itself has betrayed its own values — objectivity, contextualization, equality for irrationality, feelings, ahistoricism and ‘equity.’
