Spring is finally making its way to Maine, home of the starting point (or terminus) of the Appalachian Trail. The AT was the first of its kind – an extended walking trail preserved against development for the sole purpose of recreation. Below I tell the story of Benton MacKaye, the visionary who willed the AT into being.
