I’ve seen STAR WARS: A NEW HOPE more than 150 times. Last night, while rewatching it yet again with my eldest son, I caught something that has changed forever how I’ll see a single scene in it…and broke my heart as a father. Let me explain.
Early in the film, an Imperial Commander tells Darth Vader about Senator Leia Organa, “She’ll die before she tells you anything.”
Vader responds, “Leave that to me. Send a distress signal and then inform the Senate that all aboard [the Tantive 4] were killed!”
Soon after, Leia’s home world of Alderaan is destroyed by the Death Star.
That means that the very last thing that former senator Bail Organa, Leia’s father, is told before his own death is that his only child has died. As grief tears him and his wife apart, a moon-sized battle station arrives and blows his world up.
But it gets worse, thanks to how ROGUE ONE explains how Leia got on the Tantive IV. She was sent on that mission by her father, Bail, after he told Mon Mothma, “I would trust her with my life.”
In other words, Bail Organa dies believing he got his daughter killed.
