The specific quote is from Sir James Jeans in his book Through Space and Time (Chapter I: The Earth):

"We shall travel—or pretend to travel—so far through space that our earth will look like less than the tiniest of motes in a sunbeam". 

So I agree Sagan tidied it up somewhat.
