NEW: A new study found that only 2.5% of adolescents and young adults who identify as transgender completed fertility preservation before medical transition.

Out of 311 patients, just 8 preserved fertility—all of them male.

This is despite the fact that many reported wanting children in the future and that having biological children is important to them.

Many also said they'd "reassess" their desire to preserve their fertility later into their transition, even though that option may not exist later due to the nature of the treatments.

I break down what the study believes to be the reason for the low rates and sex disparity in fertility preservation, how it fits with previous research, and what it reveals about the state of pediatric "gender-affirming care."
