The whole “put in the reps” and “do it 100 times” approach is for the second tribe mostly. The process/craft crowd. The content-care group I’ve described below simply doesn’t operate that way. Instrumental work that’s done purely to drive a learning curve doesn’t fit the motivational profile. OTOH “discovery reps” are still possible, where you’re not learning so much as trying out different attacks on a single idea you care about.

For the same reason, the “make 100 pots” parable leaves me cold. I don’t care to refine my pot-making to drive up the yield of six-sigma-good pots. I’m fine with the craft levels of what I do being mediocre so long as the idea is one I care about.

Care is also kinda non-renewable. It uses up ideas. Once you’ve done it once or a few times, you’ll likely stop caring. To go from a few reps to 100+ you have to care more about the craft than the idea itself. Which is never the case with me.

This is an interesting, and I think correct way of thinking about creative potential for about half of us, for whom it’s entirely about the content. It’s a finite number of ideas we’re capable of having and caring about enough to pursue. I think I’m in this group.

But for the other half of people I think of as process or craft-oriented, …
