AI Governance and the Board Question Every CISO Will Face

Every board at a regulated B2B SaaS company is asking the same question right now: "What is our AI risk exposure?"

Most CISOs don't have a clean answer.

Here is the problem. Your legal team is worried about data leakage. Your engineering team is shipping LLM features. Your compliance team is asking whether your AI vendor agreements meet HIPAA, NYDFS, or SOC 2 requirements. And nobody is talking to each other.

AI Governance is not a security checkbox. It is a cross-functional operating model.

What it looks like in practice:

LLM usage policy with teeth, reviewed by Legal and enforced by Engineering

AI vendor risk tiers with data handling requirements baked into procurement

Board-reportable metrics: which AI tools are approved, which are shadow-deployed, and what sensitive data they can access

Continuous monitoring for prompt injection and unauthorized API calls

Companies that get this right are not slowing down AI adoption. They are accelerating it, because they have built the guardrails that give the business confidence to move fast.

If your board is asking about AI risk and you are still building the framework to answer them, that is the conversation I want to have.

What is your biggest AI governance challenge right now?
