we recently got a threads account for moodmilk, and within a day of me starting to post, someone asked for a ”neurodivergent friendly” version of one of our flamboyant graphics. i guessed that they meant something easier to read, and linked to the post for them. but this question clarified something important: we cannot be for everyone if we want to be ourselves.
first of all, let’s make it clear that neurodivergent is an umbrella term that covers vastly different conditions with varying, and contradictory, support needs. for the two specific neurodivergent people who run this publication fueled by AuDHD and chaotic sleep schedules, being loud and colourful is part of our unmasked expression. we cannot compromise on that without betraying our principles.
i say this while linking this particular post because it’s about leaning into our brains weirdness as part of our creative process. it’s a defiant celebration of our tendencies to be distracted by side quests and talk a lot about our interests. it says we are not broken, we are not too much.
