A Thread of Daughters, 2023
I didn’t understand the work I was making in grad school until I made this piece. Thinking about my Lola’s, (my grandmother), and my mother’s daughterhood and daughter identity helped me understand who they are/were as women.
It honestly took them both off a pedestal and put them on the same playing field as me. Something I guess only time and age will give you.
A Thread of Daughters was made by ripping raw canvas, sewing it back together with the thread from that canvas, and archival photos were scanned and printed on canvas, then sewed onto the panels.
The first panel is my Lola’s, Araceli
The second is my mother’s, Eileen
And the last panel is of me and my mother and Lola.
