In Japanese mythology, Kagutsuchi is the god of fire and destruction. His birth caused the burning and subsequent death of his mother Izanami. His father Izanagi was utterly grief-stricken so cut he off Kagutsuchi's head. He then chopped his body into eight pieces which became volcanoes. Many other kami were born from his body too, including two water gods that were created from his dripping blood. Because in old Japan houses were made of wood and paper, fire was greatly feared and kagutsuchi was worshipped to ensure protection against fire. Today Kagutsuchi is the patron deity of blacksmiths and potters. He is also a god of energy and industry.
