Someone wrote to me this week with a question I've been sitting with.

'How do I talk to my teenager about online safety without them shutting me down immediately?'

The honest answer is: you probably can't, if you frame it as a lecture.

What tends to work is starting from curiosity rather than concern. 'What are you playing at the moment? What's that like?' Not 'I need to talk to you about something serious.'

Trust is built over a hundred small conversations, not one big one. The big conversation is much easier when the foundation is already there.
