Parental controls are useful. I've written free guides and created a setup wizard on how to use them across every major platform and device. I think every family should use them.
But they're not a substitute for conversation.
They can restrict content. They can't teach a child what to do when they encounter something upsetting despite the filters. They can monitor time. They can't help a child recognise when someone's behaviour towards them isn't right.
Use the tools. Have the conversations. Both. Neither alone is enough.
