I’ve seen this happen in the UK too. It’s quite painful to watch. On one occasion I remember a group of teachers saying that the students from one particularly successful school might have done well at school, but they had all dropped out at university.

That particular school hadn’t had a cohort go to university yet! But an urban myth had sprung up about it regardless.
