The app for independent voices

I think I mainly agree with Andrew Old ‘s argument in this post. Generally speaking, I think it’s good to use technology to reduce teacher workload and improve teacher efficiency.

I think the one quibble I have is that if the technology gets really good, trainee teachers (and indeed trainees in other professions) may need to do stuff on their own, without technology, in order to build the schema they need to be able to use technology effectively.

It’s the same reason why we ask school students to do sums by hand even though they will have a calculator in later life.

EG imagine we get to a world where the AI can do all the marking & feedback, and the experienced teacher can just read a short summary of the AI’s analysis to get the gist of its judgements and understand how their students are doing.

I still think trainee teachers will need to spend time reading student work in order to be able to make sense of what the AI is doing and to make sense of its “teacher digest”.

The informal training that you used to get on the job will cease to exist. So we’ll need to build that in to formal training.
