Joan Didion began writing for Vogue in 1956 after winning the Prix de Paris, the student essay contest whose first prize was a position on the magazine’s editorial staff.

Her first bylined piece came about almost by chance: it was written to fill last-minute editorial space when another writer failed to deliver. And the rest is history of literature.
