Today I learned New Zealand had its own wartime internment camps, on Somes Island in Wellington harbour. German locals & others were locked up there during both world wars. Signage on the island today is light and weirdly free of any moral reckoning. There’s no sense of regret like you used to see at the US camp in Manzanar, before Trump had it removed. People do cruel, stupid shit in wartime. Nations are terrible at apologies. We ate sandwiches and walked back to the dock. The kids found a starfish, took it prisoner for awhile, then set it carefully back in the waves.
