My latest article, ‘The Etymological Problem with Apples’, validates my conviction that the most ordinary words are the most etymologically interesting ones, so often taking us on long, winding journeys into prehistory. The star example here is ‘apple’, which has contributed to a debate over whether a language spoken six thousand years ago had words beginning with B.
