It was an excellent speech and should have been allowed to stand on its own. Putin knows that this country won't dispatch CIA assassins or hire mercenaries like he has reportedly done but there's nothing wrong with giving him a few moments of concern about his own bodyguards. What should be done quietly is sending long-range SAMs and other weapons along with upgraded intelligence tools to the Ukrainians so they can get done the job of stopping the Russians. Then set criteria for an end to the sanctions beginning with a return to the status quo ante 2014 and the establishment of Crimea as an independent state.
