I've heard some folks say they want justice for Renee Nicole Good. I am very sorry but just don't see how that is possible. I certainly want to see accountability, including for the people who are now harboring a fugitive. When the charges are filed in state court, I want to see Noem and ICE leaders indicted as accessories after the fact.
But that's not what justice looks like for Renee Good. Justice for her would be decades of life with her family. Watching her now six year old son graduate from high school. Dance with her loved one at their childrens' weddings. Serving her community and loving her family for years and years and years.
That's what justice looks like for Renee Good. And it's never going to happen.
In 1837, Rev. Elijah Parrish Lovejoy was murdered for defending freedom peacefully through newspaper editorials. At his funeral, his brother Owen offered words that might offer some guidance here - words that, as a relative (if somewhat distant) I have inherited with all the rest. He said he "would never forsake the cause that had been sprinkled with his brother's blood". Owen Lovejoy kept that promise - and all who hold dear the cause of freedom still strive to keep that promise today.
Justice for Renee Good is impossible. That was stolen from her. But we can honor her memory by never forsaking the cause for which she gave her life.
