Feeling ambivalent as I sit down to watch the Louise Theroux documentary on The Manosphere.
I first read blogs that would now be considered Manosphere content 20 years ago when no one had heard of it. A lot of the early stuff was eye-opening regarding intersexual relationships and offered the potential to help both men and women get more of what we want from each other.
Slowly, I watched the community split between a group that leaned more into misogyny and another, more positive group who turned more toward helping men improve their lives.
All of that has faded now and what remains of the Manosphere is populated with clowns, I’m afraid. Much of the real insight of the early days is now, more or less, mainstream opinion or, at least, quasi-mainstream.
Too bad it took someone like Theroux two decades to document these developments. I’m guessing the whole film s going to focus on the most obnoxious members of the current group of influencers.
Anyone else seen it? Am I hitting the mark?
