Is the “M. Night Shyamalan plot device” trending again?
The last two novels I’ve read have a twist towards the end that make everything before it obsolete. In the first book, my takeaway was: “Fine, that was clever. I felt a little tricked and annoyed, especially given the specific marketing around it, but I can get behind this plot choice for this story.”
For the second one, which is not out yet (I had an ARC), it was so late in the game (like the 85% mark on my Kindle). I ADORED this book before that and talked about it for weeks, insisting people consider pre-ordering. I was considering doing a local pop-up book club around it. I was into this book!! The twist ruined the ENTIRE STORY for me.
And I’m not naming the books because I’m not in the business of hurting people’s book orders. But if this is a new trend, count me out.
