Amongst the papers of Austrian-American chemist Hugh Rechnitzer I found this photo. On the back Rechnitzer wrote:
“At Tongku. French Algerians out for a walk. Russian guard over ammunition. German sailor. Russian officers with wheelbarrow. — S.L.E.”
Tongku (Tanggu in Pinyin) was the deep-water landing for Tianjin, the treaty port at the mouth of the Hai river through which the foreign armies passed on their way inland.
