(Part 2): my goal with my substack publication is to demystify literature. I want to look beyond the ivory tower idea that “classic” literature is inherently difficult and inaccessible - available only to scholars or students who studied literature in undergrad or further. The truth is, we mystify so much of the canon and create intimidation where it really shouldn’t be. For instance, the Victorians invented the cliffhanger - you could even argue that they invented the thriller as we know it today. A lot of Victorian novels are just that: early forms of things we love now. To that end, here’s more of a 100+ curriculum for Victorian Literature, based on my experiences as an English Literature PhD student. 💌
