On this day in Texas history, in 1976, Mesquite native Donald “Donnie” Gay set a National Finals Rodeo record by scoring 95 on his ride of Red One. With this eighth Professional Rodeo Cowboy Association (PRCA) bull riding championship, he broke James A. “Jim” Shoulders record. Gay’s record that still stands. He was a twelve-time qualifier for the NFR and is a member of the Pro Rodeo Hall of Fame, Texas Cowboy Hall of Fame, and Texas Sports Hall of Fame.
