On this day in Texas history, in 1896, Judge Roy Bean—the “Law West of the Pecos”—staged a heavyweight prize fight between Peter Mehar and Robert Fitzsimmons on an island in the Rio Grande on the Mexican side, because prize fighting had been outlawed in both Texas and the United States.
