On this day in Texas history, in 1917, Blanco County native Ophelia G. “Birdie” Crosby Harwood became the first woman in Texas (and one of the first in the nation) to be elected mayor, three years before women had the franchise to vote. One of her favorite campaign slogans was to “make two nickels grew where only one grew before.” She had a solid record of reforming Marble Falls. She passed away in February 28, 1954.
